10  Foundational Texts in Hydrogeology

A running, linked list of foundational and classic texts in hydrogeology — textbooks, monographs, and papers that lab members have found useful as background reading.

These are papers we are compiling as a group. They reflect our own research interests and priorities, and are by no means an authoritative or comprehensive list!

10.1 Textbooks

  • Groundwater — Freeze, R.A. and Cherry, J.A., 1979, Prentice-Hall
Notes The classic hydrogeology textbook, now free to read online (in multiple languages) courtesy of The Groundwater Project.
  • Applied Hydrogeology — Fetter, C.W., 2001, 4th ed., Prentice Hall
Notes A widely used applied hydrogeology textbook covering flow, well hydraulics, and contaminant transport; available to borrow via the Internet Archive.
  • Applied Groundwater Modeling: Simulation of Flow and Advective Transport — Anderson, M.P., Woessner, W.W. and Hunt, R.J., 2015, 2nd ed., Academic Press
Notes The standard reference on the groundwater modeling process, from conceptual model to MODFLOW implementation to calibration and uncertainty analysis.

10.2 Peer-Reviewed Papers

10.2.1 Regional Groundwater Flow Theory

10.2.2 Decision Analysis & Value of Information

10.3 Technical Reports
