9  Funding

Katie does not typically accept students into the lab without being able to guarantee full funding (2 years for MS, 4 for PhD).

Funded position openings in the lab will be posted through the lab website and via other distribution feeds (e.g. ES_Jobs_Net).

Katie encourages all students to apply for external funding through graduate scholarships. This is a great thing to do early in your degree as it forces you to engage with the literature, hones your technical writing skills, and promotes a stronger understanding and ownership of your project. Plus, these fellowships tend to pay above the TA/RA rate. Some relevant external ones are:

The UNM EPS Dept. Chair also has discretionary funds that can be used to defray the costs of attending conferences. Please coordinate with Katie to make a reuqest.

Lastly, internships are a great way to get real-world job experience and fund yourself over the summer (or during the school year if you are able to align your thesis/dissertation work with the intership). Internships often lead to opportunities to work for the organization or company, but at minimum make you more competitive on the job market. They also can give you a sense of what you ultimately want to do after graduating. For example, consulting is a fast-paced job that is not for everyone, but some find it very rewarding (intellectually and financially).
