5  Onboarding

Welcome to the Markovich Lab at UNM!

Here are some resources to help you get settled into the lab. Our group is excited that you have decided to join our team! We hope that these onboarding resources, guidelines, and tips will make your transition to UNM seamless and enjoyable. Most importantly, welcome!

If you are already a student, post-doc, or researcher we hope these resources prove useful as well.

5.1 New employee and student onboarding checklist

Complete the following as soon as possible after joining the lab.

UNM Administration

  1. Register a new NetID: https://netid.unm.edu/new-netid-registration/index.html
  2. Get your LoboCard: https://lobocard.unm.edu/your-card/index.html
  3. Set up your UNM email and familiarize yourself with LoboWeb
  4. Request key/keycard access to Northrop 207 and 208 by emailing Tammy Cline and cc’ing Dr. Markovich

Individual Development

  1. Schedule a one-on-one meeting with Katie to discuss your research direction and goals for the semester
  2. Complete your IDP using myIDP
  3. Fill out your mentoring agreement with Katie — template here

5.2 First Semester Checklist

Your first semester has a few hard deadlines set by EPS and UNM Graduate Studies. The checklist below combines those requirements with lab-specific expectations. Refer to the EPS Graduate Student Roadmap for the full picture.

By end of Week 1

By end of Month 1

By end of Semester 1

TipEPS + UNM deadlines are not always the same

Track both independently. The EPS Graduate Student Roadmap and the UNM Graduate Studies deadlines page are your two authoritative sources.

5.3 Individual Development/Mentoring Plans

Within the first few weeks of joining the Markovich Lab, you should work with Katie to develop a plan outlining your short, medium, and long term goals. Create your IDP using myIDP. Also within the first few weeks, you should fill out your mentoring agreement with Katie. The template can be found here.

5.4 Facilities

5.4.1 Office space

Our physical “lab” space is in Northrop 207. This room contains our computing cluster. Katie’s office is room 208.

Everyone in the lab is provided with desk space in one of the dedicated graduate student offices. Graduate students should make use of their allocated space in the shared area but can do computational work in the lab area.

Lab meetings are in-person in Katie’s office, but will be made hybrid upon request to allow for full participation even when members whose work location (including temporarily) is off-site.

5.4.2 Key card building & room access

Access to the lab space and Northrop Hall after hours will require a key. You can request this by emailing the Dept. Administrator Tammy Cline and cc’ing Dr. Markovich on that email. Other buildings, including PAIS and Castetter, have keycard access (using your LoboCard). To request access, you will need to email the respective dept. administrators.

5.4.3 Parking and transportation

UNM has a very cool Bike Valet program located near the SUB.
